TCG Game Rules & Priorities
A deep understanding of the rules engine is what separates casual kitchen-table play from tournament mastery. When you understand the minutiae of phases and priority, you unlock plays that your opponent won't see coming.
Card Advantage
Card advantage is a cornerstone theory of trading card games. Simply put, whoever sees and utilizes more cards over the course of the game is statistically more likely to win.
The +1 Concept
If you play a card that draws two cards, you spent 1 card to gain 2. Net result: +1 card advantage. If your opponent uses two cards to destroy one of your powerful creatures, they are at a -1 card disadvantage.
Virtual Card Advantage
Blanking an opponent's strategy. If you play an enchantment that prevents all damage from small creatures, and your opponent holds a hand full of small creatures they cannot effectively use, you have gained virtual card advantage.
The Anatomy of a Turn
Most games follow a strict step-by-step pathway. Knowing exactly when to intervene is vital.
Beginning Phase
Untap resources, maintain upkeep triggers, and draw for turn. Interruptions here can choke an opponent's options before their main phase.
Pre-Combat Main Phase
Playing cards and setting up. Smart opponents wait to play non-essential cards until after combat to leave their options open.
Combat Phase
Declare attackers, declare blockers, assign damage. Combat tricks (instant speed buffs) thrive here.
Post-Combat Main Phase
Executing secondary strategies based on how combat resolved.
