Trading Card Deck Building

Drawing the right card is luck; building the deck that draws it is skill. The architectural phase of any TCG is where tournaments are truly won.

Mana Bases

In games that utilize a resource system (like lands or energy), your mana base is the foundation. If you cannot pay for your cards, their text boxes are irrelevant. The golden rule is calculating the probability of having the correct colored resource by the turn you need to cast your key spell.

Count Your Symbols

Tally up the specific colored resource requirements in your deck. Cards with double specific costs (e.g., RR or UU) require a statistically higher density of that resource source.

The Rule of 14

To reliably cast a turn-one play requiring a specific resource in a 60-card deck, you need at least 14 sources of that resource to hit it roughly 90% of the time in your opening hand.

Avoid Tap-Lands if Aggro

Resources that enter play unusable delay your mana curve by a full turn. Aggressive decks must minimize these to maintain tempo.

Deck Archetypes

Below are common structural frameworks used across various trading card games.

Aggro (Aggressive)

Low mana curve, high threat density. Goal: Win before the opponent stabilizes.

Fast

Control

High removal, counter-magic, and a slow, inevitable win condition.

Slow

Midrange

Plays the most efficient threat or answer at every point in the curve.
